Most fires are often referred to as “partial losses” because the home has only been partially destroyed. However, there are typically hidden damages caused by water or retardant to extinguish the fire and smoke and ash as a residual effect of the fire. It is important to shut down all ventilation systems and open all windows and doors to evacuate smoke.

In most cases, the insurance carrier is responsible to return your property to a “uniform and consistent appearance” as it was prior to the effects of the fire. Do not throw away any damaged property, leave it as it is and where it is until the fire marshal has completed his investigation. Coverage for the cost of landscaping replacement is typically a set amount or a percentage of your dwelling coverage amount. We complete a visual examination of suspected materials and carefully collect samples for lab analysis. If a biohazard is present, we provide a written evaluation describing its location and extent of damage and write a protocol for clean up and disposal. If asbestos is present, we provide a written evaluation describing its location and extent of damage and write a protocol for correction, restoration, and prevention. Once again, material in good condition need not be sampled for asbestos unless it is likely to be disturbed.

Bio-Hazard Cleanup

Any biological substance that poses a threat to you or your family’s health can be considered a bio-hazard. A biohazard can range from the smallest microorganism to a human body or animal body. Disaster Response Team

If you suspect that a portion of your home contains asbestos, then, first off, leave it alone. Asbestos is only dangerous when disturbed and it releases fibers.

However, if the suspected item shows signs of wear, tears, abrasions or water damage, then isolate the item (meaning close the space off) and contact National First Response. A member of our Disaster Response Team can more thoroughly seal off the item until it can be confirmed with lab test to, in fact, be asbestos. Our Clean Trust-certified technicians will suggest either permanently sealing the asbestos item or carefully removing the item altogether and clearing the impacted area of any contaminates using an air scrubber and other cleaning equipment. Whichever course of action, you’ll be left with the peace of mind knowing that asbestos will no longer threaten the health of you or your family.

Stay Clear of Asbestos

When asbestos is disturbed—by crumbling, flaking, sanding, cutting or sawing—it creates a fibrous dust that, if inhaled in high levels, can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Inhaled fibers can remain in the lungs for years before creating health problems.

Take all precautions to avoid damaging asbestos material. Never sweep, dust, or vacuum debris that may contain asbestos. Also, don’t saw, sand, scrape, or drill holes in asbestos. Local EPA officials can provide more information about asbestos identification, sealing or removal.

So where to start. A few months back, during our atmospheric river rain, I developed a roof leak. I live in a patio home with a flat roof. I went on Angie's list and selected four contractors to come out and give me a quote for roof replacements. Each one went up on the roof and saw a pot of gold and wrote their quotes. Why was I shocked? I didn't know what I was going to do. I then got a call from Brendan from National First Response as he saw my requests on Angie's list. He asked me if they could come out and look at my roof. I said sure. We got up on the roof and started looking around and he brought to my attention that my roof had major hail and wind damage, so we needed to contact my insurance company first and get an adjuster out to look at the roof. The insurance adjuster looked at my roof and agreed with Brendan. The insurance company wrote up their quote of what they said they would pay to do the needed work of replacing the roof. Nicole in the office was my go-to person to set up scheduling. She did a fantastic job of keeping me informed of all aspects of the work. She made me feel comfortable with all the work that was going to be performed on my house as this was no small job. She made me feel very confident that no corners were going to be cut regarding my roof repairs. Nicole scheduled the start date and sent Michael, the project manager of this job, out to go over with me the aspects of the job. Fantastic young man! The crew showed up on time and got right to work stripping the roof. Once the roof was stripped, they discovered the wood decking was damaged. Nicole said don't worry, Michael was getting photos and they were submitting an additional damage report to the insurance company. They followed up with my insurance company to get the approval for the decking replacement. Now mind you, not all insurance companies are alike. They also worked with me to replace the fascia along the edge of the house and to bring the patio roof and laundry room, which was flat, to conform with the rest of the roof at a fair price. Bottom line, if I could push the golden buzzer on National First Response I would.
